Shiny Object Syndrome (SOS):
The Most Paralyzing Issue Facing Today's Entrepreneurs
Do you ever feel like you're going nowhere fast when starting a business?
You put in years of effort, only to hit roadblock after roadblock.
And just when you think you've found your groove, things start feeling impossible again. Sound familiar?
I get it. It's frustrating to watch others succeed while you're stuck in the same old cycle.
But here's the thing - there's gotta be more to it, right? Others have cracked the code, so why can't we?
Let's dig deeper.
Join me as we explore what's really holding us back and how we can finally break free from this endless cycle. It's time to uncover the real secrets to success.
We've been taught to seek the highest-paying job, ideally one we enjoy, to maximise our earnings. From there, we either spend it or, for the savvy ones, find various ways to invest it.
The majority of aspiring entrepreneurs step into the business world (often referred to as their boss's domain) with this mindset.
Let's change that today...
What is SOS?
Shiny object syndrome is the phenomenon of being distracted by new and exciting opportunities.
For entrepreneurs, this can mean new business ideas, or products or services that aren’t part of their current business plan.
They have an urge to try this new thing that someone seems to be doing successfully.
For beginners, this translates to always seeking the next best business opportunity or the next top-rated course, purchasing course after opportunity after course after.....
Realising you are experiencing shiny object syndrome means admitting that your focus is waning and you’re being pulled away by possibility and a fear of missing out.
Why is shiny object syndrome a problem?
Getting a business off the ground and to any level of success requires focus, effort and persistence, much like anything else in life.
While some businesses can succeed as side projects, those that go the furthest have the full attention of the founders.
But founders can overlook the work required to make even the shiniest of objects perform, and barrel forward without realising the cost.
Plus, shiny objects are particularly appealing when progress in your main venture is slow.
Or even when progress is fast, if you have an underlying fear of success, shiny object syndrome can crop up as a form of self-sabotage.
For novices, this often translates to feelings of "this is too hard, it should be paying off instantly, why do I have to implement what I'm learning, here is the next best social media thing, the next best course, the next best quick buck opportunity, why did he get that, etc..."
Shiny objects (the next course, the next business model, the next opportunity) may appear attractive, but they're just that - shiny distractions. Those who have already put in the hard work and changed their mindset and understood how business works, can now grasp how to launch their next business much quicker and with greater precision. However, beginners must first learn the ropes, implement them, and then assess what adjustments their mindset, skillset, and toolset require to expedite their progress. Achieving it is entirely feasible, and the sense of accomplishment fosters further success. Success leads to more success. That's why newcomers often think, "If that person did it, it must be the next big thing - let's go for it." They may not realise the effort and mindset change required to make it seem effortless and achievable. But guess what? It is achievable! Newcomers just need to commit and follow the plan. How? Stay focused on your tasks every day and avoid distractions.
How to avoid shiny object syndrome?
Experiencing shiny object syndrome doesn’t mean your existing business or course is duff. It means you’re human.
But recognising when a shiny object is and isn’t useful will help you stay on track. When you become enamoured with the possibility of a new thing, train yourself to think about the potential of your current thing. It’s easy to think about the best-case scenario of something unknown, and harder when you’re facing challenges every day. But remember what you’re working so hard towards and how much progress you’re making.
Try this:
Ask yourself first: What does my ideal lifestyle look like? This video will guide you through the process step by step.
Ask yourself next: What is my financial freedom number? This video will guide you through the process step by step.
Then ask your soul: Do I want to achieve this through a business or as an employee? Make a final decision.
If you decide to go with a business, first decide which model you want:
1) Do you want to create products yourself or sell already made products?
2) Decide if you want to sell physical or digital products?
3) Which industry (Fashion, Business Solutions, Marketing, etc...) do you prefer?
4) What business model do you want? Business2Business or Business2Customer?
You know, when it comes down to it, the choice of industry and business model doesn't really matter all that much. But for some of us, it's really about following our hearts. One big mistake I've seen people make is thinking, "Once I make money doing this, then I'll pursue what I really want."
Don't go down that road. It'll mess with your soul and make everything a whole lot harder. You'll end up feeling frustrated and down. Remember, business is tied to work. So if there's something you've always wanted to do, just go for it. Your subconscious will kick in faster, because it already has feelings attached to your preferred purpose and your mind will help you make it happen.
